How We Do Cold and Flu Season

If you follow me at all on Facebook, Pinterest or hopefully on this blog you will know that I am CRAZY IN LOVE with essential oils right now.   Whenever I post about essential oils I get a lot of question to which I usually do not know the answers to but I really enjoy researching and finding new ways to use the products. Right now I am in love with my diffuser I have used many products in my home to make it smell nice but due to chemical sensitivities they usually make me sick. My house currently smells like Lemongrass, the last few days I have been rather sick trying to get through a cleanse and have really enjoyed diffusing Peppermint, Thieves, and Peace and Calming.

So what is an essential oil?

Properly extracted essential oils are low steam distilled from leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots or another element of a plant or cold pressed from the rind in the case of citrus oils.  Essential Oils  are quite literally the life blood of the plant.  Powerful properties of the plant are packed into this aromatic, volatile liquid or essential oil that holds the therapeutic powerhouse of that specific plant from which it was extracted. Essential Oils are very concentrated and a little bit goes a very long way. I am surprised how little I have to use in order to see benefits.

Many of our modern day pharmaceuticals contain properties that have been synthetically reproduced from plants.   Willow and other salicylate-rich plants have long been used in order to relieve fever and ease pain, this is where we get common day aspirin (source).  Plants such as these and many others have been successful at healing the human body since the beginning of time.   Baby Jesus was brought Frankincense, and Myrrh, both were used by the ancients for healing and religious ceremonies. Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their healing benefits and more and more research continues to be done today. I am currently waiting to receive a book called Healing Oils of the Bible by David Stewart, Ph.D.

I love to use herbal, food, and vitamin remedies for my family. I believe that you need to have an arsenal available to you when you are raising a family.  I have found that using food, herbs, and vitamins in order to support the body, build immunities, and  to heal from sickness works great for our family. As most of you know it has been this arsenal that I believe has kept my kids out of the doctors office and antibiotic free for 17 years. My all time favorite book was given to me when Joe was a baby by Georgell it was called Superimmunity for Kids: What to Feed Your Children to Keep Them Healthy Now, and Prevent Disease in Their Future by Leo Galland M.D. I truly believe this gift was the best gift our family has ever received. At the age of 17 Joe has never had to ingest any pharmaceutical drugs and we have never had to worry about their side effects. The same is true of Eli only he has been on antibiotics once due to an infected tooth. I HIGHLY recommend anyone with children to read this book. Ashlin went from sick all the time and constant trips to the pediatrician to no doctor trips for years. It is NEVER too late to start.

In the winter time we often stock up on a collection of vitamins on top of lots of green veggies. Elderberry, Echinacea, Oregano Oil, Vitamin C, Vitamin D. This year I am so excited to be adding bone broth to the mix. I can not believe I have been a mother for over 20 years and I have never read about the benefits of it. So far so good the kids like it. As we speak I currently am roasting deer bones to make deer broth. I am not sure that any one person should be so excited about something but I am over the moon. These bones are from a healthy, antibiotic free, free-roaming, all natural deer! Thank you Eric!!!! So now on top of all of these amazing things I have been doing for years I am adding essential oils. There are so many ways they can be used and as my kids will attest they are my favorite Guinea pigs. 🙂

I’m never going to recommend, or say anything that I don’t love or completely believe in. Please know that I am in no way judging how anyone decides to raise their family I am just passionate and excited about all of the things I have learned and am continuing to learn. I feel so blessed to have such amazing women like my mom, my Mother-In-Love Georgell, and my Aunt Donna who have NEVER taken the easy way, women who have researched and researched and who have lovingly shared all of their wisdom. I am a better mother, wife, and woman because of your love and devotion.

I also am learning that you have to be really careful when even sharing personal stories so I am adding a disclaimer.
